My Lullaby

A firefly bedtime story for kids

A gentle bedtime story for a child who feels small — a little firefly learns her own soft light is exactly enough, and dims to sleep.

My Lullaby writes a new, soothing story every night, starring your own child.

Flicker the Little Firefly Whose Light Was Just Enough

On a warm summer evening, in a meadow full of tall grass and clover, a tiny firefly named Flicker blinked awake.

As the sky turned from gold to deep blue, Flicker rose up over the meadow with all the other fireflies, and began to glow. But when she looked up and saw the stars — thousands of them, blazing bright and endless across the whole sky — her own little light suddenly felt very small.

"My glow is so tiny," she said sadly, flickering low in the grass. "The stars shine so big and bright. What good is my little light next to all of that?"

An old firefly with a warm, steady glow drifted down beside her. "Come with me," he said. "Let me show you something."

He led her down, down into the tall grass, where a little family of field mice was settling in for the night. And there, in the dark at the bottom of the meadow — where no starlight could ever reach — Flicker's small glow lit up the whole cosy nest, soft and golden and warm.

The littlest mouse looked up at her light, and smiled, and closed his eyes, comforted.

"The stars are far away," said the old firefly gently. "But your light is close. It's small and warm and near — and that is exactly what a little one needs to feel safe in the dark. Your light is enough. Your light is just right."

Flicker glowed a little brighter, warm all the way through. She didn't need to be a star. She was a firefly, and her small, kind light mattered — right here, right where she was.

And now the meadow was growing sleepy. One by one, the fireflies were dimming their lights and settling into the soft grass to rest.

Flicker drifted down onto a broad, cool leaf. She let her glow grow soft, and softer, dimming slowly like a tiny lamp turned low.

"Goodnight," she whispered to the meadow.

And the little firefly, her light gentle and just enough, faded softly into a warm, sleepy glow, and drifted off to sleep.
