My Lullaby

An owl bedtime story for kids

A reassuring bedtime story for a child who finds the dark a little scary — a small owl learns that the night is soft, safe, and full of gentle friends.

My Lullaby writes a new story every night, in your family's language, with your child at its heart.

Ollie the Owl and the Friendly Dark

In the tallest oak at the edge of the wood, in a round little hollow lined with feathers, lived a young owl named Ollie.

Ollie was an owl, and owls are meant to love the night. But Ollie didn't. When the sun went down and the wood grew dark and hush, Ollie's tummy went fluttery. "It's too quiet," he whispered, tucking himself far back in the hollow. "It's too dark. I don't like it."

His grandmother, a great grey owl with kind round eyes, settled onto the branch beside him. "Come, Ollie," she said gently. "Let me show you the dark. Once you meet it, you'll see it's a friend."

Ollie shuffled to the edge of the hollow, just a little. Grandmother pointed one soft wing out into the night.

"Listen," she whispered.

Ollie listened. And the quiet wasn't empty at all. He heard the small, kind sounds of the night: a breeze moving softly through the leaves, like a long slow breath. A little stream, murmuring far below. A cricket, chirping its steady, sleepy song.

"Now look," said Grandmother.

Ollie looked. And the dark wasn't empty either. A moth drifted past on pale wings, floating like a tiny ghost. Fireflies blinked on and off in the grass, soft as slow stars. And high above the oak, the round moon poured down light like cool silver milk, so the whole wood glowed gently in the dark.

"Oh," breathed Ollie. "It's not scary. It's… soft."

"The dark is just the day, resting," said Grandmother. "It holds the sleeping birds and the quiet trees and you, safe in your hollow. It has been keeping little owls cosy for longer than there have been stars."

Ollie let out a small, brave hoot into the night, and the night hooted softly back through the leaves. He didn't feel fluttery anymore. He felt held.

He nestled back into the warm feathers beside his grandmother, his round eyes growing heavy at last.

"Goodnight, friendly dark," Ollie whispered.

And rocked by the soft sounds of the gentle night, the little owl closed his eyes and drifted, at last, to sleep.
