Toddler sleep regression: what it is and how to ride it out

Zaktualizowano 22 czerwca 2026

Your toddler was sleeping beautifully — and then, almost overnight, bedtime became a battle and the 3 a.m. wake-ups came back. It's exhausting, but it's almost always temporary. It's called a sleep regression.

Here's what's really happening, and what actually helps.

What a sleep regression is

A sleep regression is a stretch — usually a few days to a few weeks — when a child who slept well suddenly resists bedtime, wakes more often, or naps poorly.

It's less a step backwards than a sign of a leap forward: a burst of development that throws sleep temporarily off balance. Knowing that can make the hard nights a little easier to bear.

The common ages (and why)

Regressions tend to cluster around big developmental moments: around 4 months (sleep cycles mature), 8–10 months (crawling and separation anxiety), 18 months (independence and molars), and around 2 years (imagination, new fears, dropping a nap).

If your toddler's wobble lines up with one of these, it's usually right on schedule — and right on its way out.

What actually helps

Hold the routine. The more predictable bedtime stays, the faster sleep settles. Keep the wind-down calm and dim, and watch for overtiredness — an earlier bedtime often helps more than a later one.

Offer extra reassurance without inventing brand-new habits, and keep night-time responses brief and boring, so the message stays clear: it's still sleep time. A familiar bedtime story is a powerful anchor here — it signals, every night, that the day is closing.

What to avoid

Try not to overhaul everything at once, and don't start habits you can't keep up — hours of rocking, or moving them into your bed if that's not what you want long-term. Big changes made in the middle of a regression usually drag it out.

And try not to assume it's permanent. It rarely is.

When it passes — and when to ask

Most regressions settle within two to six weeks, as the new skill beds in and your child catches up on rest.

If sleep troubles last much longer, or come with snoring, pain, or pauses in breathing, check in with your pediatrician.
