Raising a bilingual child: keeping your home language alive

Mis à jour 21 juin 2026

If you're raising your child away from home, you've probably felt it: the nursery, the friends, the cartoons are all in another language, and one day your child answers you in it too.

Keeping your home language alive is absolutely possible — and it doesn't take lessons or pressure. It takes a little, often, in moments your child already loves.

Why the home language slips

Children are pragmatic. They learn the language they need most — and outside the home, that's the local one. Without enough warm, everyday exposure, the home language quietly fades, even when they still understand it. The fix isn't more correction; it's more living contact with the language.

Little and often beats formal lessons

Five relaxed minutes a day does more than a weekly grammar drill. Sing, cook, video-call grandparents, narrate the walk to the park — all in your language. The goal is for the language to feel like home and connection, not homework.

Bedtime is the perfect anchor

A bedtime story in your home language is one of the most powerful five minutes you have. It's daily, it's cosy, and it ties the language to comfort and love — exactly the feeling that makes a child want to keep it.

Hearing their own name and their own world in your language, every night, keeps the words alive in a way flashcards never will.

Stories in your language

Finding fresh material in your language abroad is often the hard part. We have free bedtime stories ready to read tonight in several languages — including Ukrainian, Polish and Russian — and My Lullaby can email a brand-new one every night, starring your child, in the language you speak at home.

Don't worry about mixing

Switching between languages, or blending them in one sentence, is completely normal for bilingual children — a sign of a flexible brain, not a problem. Keep it warm and pressure-free. Consistency and connection, not perfection, are what raise a confident bilingual child.
