Mia and the Star That Wouldn't Sleep

Mia's room was warm and quiet. The lamp glowed soft and golden, her blanket was tucked up to her chin, and outside the window the whole town was beginning to fall asleep.

Mia was almost asleep too — her eyes were heavy and her thoughts were going slow — when a tiny light tapped on the glass. Tap. Tap-tap.

It was a little star, no bigger than a button, and it looked very worried.

"Everyone else is twinkling softly," the star whispered, slipping in through the gap in the curtains. "They're all getting sleepy and dim. But I'm too bright. I'm wide awake, and I don't know how to rest."

Mia sat up a little and smiled. She knew exactly how that felt — some nights her own thoughts buzzed and buzzed and wouldn't slow down.

"I can show you my bedtime trick," she said. "It always works for me."

The little star floated down and settled on the edge of her pillow, glowing and flickering, far too fast.

"First," Mia whispered, "you breathe in, slow and deep, like you're smelling something lovely." She breathed in. The star tried it too, drawing in a long, careful breath.

"Then you let it all the way out, slower than you think." Mia breathed out. The star breathed out — and as it did, its bright, busy light softened, just a little, into a warm and gentle glow.

"Oh," said the star, surprised. "That feels nice."

"Now we count something quiet," said Mia. So together they watched the soft clouds drifting past the moon, and counted them, slow and low. One cloud. Breathe in, breathe out. Two clouds. Three.

With every cloud, the star grew calmer and cosier. Its flicker slowed to a steady shimmer, and then to a sleepy, candle-warm light.

"I think it's working," the star yawned. "My light feels soft now. My twinkle feels slow."

"That's how you know you're ready to rest," Mia whispered.

The little star drifted up, just high enough to find its place among the others in the dark, where all the stars were glowing soft and low.

"Thank you, Mia," it murmured. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight, little star," said Mia.

And Mia — who had just taught a whole star how to rest — breathed in slow, breathed out slower, and drifted gently off to sleep.
